I open my book You Can Sleep In Your Car But You Can’t Drive You House To Work with a couple of stories about trying to kill myself while depressed and having my home foreclosed in 2004. I realize my life is all “bonus hockey”. You know,
you pay to watch 3 periods of hockey and the game is tied at the end so they play another period. “Bonus hockey”; it’s all extra, no charge.
So here are just a few (very few) of the bonuses I would have missed out on had I succeeded in killing myself:
-hanging out with friends at coffee houses, pools, campfires and restaurants
-meeting several new friends
-being mentored by Larry A. and Father Gordon
-meeting and becoming friends with author Dan and Joanne Miller and their family
-becoming part of the 48days.net community
-dating and becoming friends with some beautiful women
-flying to Acapulco in a private jet (before the drug wars broke out) and staying in a 5 bedroom villa with 7 servants, having my own room with a view overlooking the bay
-bungee jumping on the beach in Acapulco (I stayed up there over 3 minutes before I jumped but I did it!)
-dog sledding in Colorado
-snowmobiling in Colorado
-running up the steps of the Sydney Opera house in Australia
-eating on a balcony in Melbourne, Australia overlooking the Yarra river at a Greek restaurant with friends
-going to see my first Broadway show, Wicked, in Melbourne Australia, yes, with friends
-walking into the Indian Ocean watching the sun come up in Dunsborough, Australia
-playing for the Minnie Perl foundation
-playing at the Country Music Hall of Fame
-playing music in a band for 3 years
-an active solo musician at bars and wineries
-playing music for friends around pools and numerous campfires
-watching a father dance with his 3 year old daughter as our band played music
-writing several great songs
-meeting my songwriting hero Don Schlitz
-last weekend I had a sensational piece of cheesecake from Cafe Coco in Nashville while hanging out with some friends
-eating a HUGE chocolate chip cookie at the Franklin Mercantile
-eating outside on the pier on the Sydney Harbour
-enjoying prime rib after in Leadville, Colorado with after a friend finishes the Leadville 100 race
-grabbing pizza with friends at the Mellow Mushroom
-starting my own business, Cool Springs Office Cleaning
-meeting Kenny Loggins after the Loggins & Messina concert at Arrington Vineyards
-hiking throughout Middle Tennessee
-having gratitude and peace (most of the time)
-handling adversity: being broke, car breaking down, paternity case (wasn’t mine per dna), break ups with women I’ve fell in love with and numerous other disappointments. I handled them and moved forward.
-authoring my first book and launching a speaking career
All of it is a bonus for me which may be why I am so passionate about living with gratitude, even for what may seem bad at the time.
I am sure glad I didn’t miss it!
What are you grateful for today?
