Will 2014 be a repeat of 2013 for you? Will you lose weight, get a raise, move to a new city, travel or find that special relationship you’ve been looking for? The key to making 2014 a better year will be the actions you take. You must act and you must be prepared to suffer to achieve.
That’s how it is with me. Nothing ever comes easily to me. I have plenty of ability but only if I work twice as hard as the next guy. I’ve made the Dean’s List in college, rode my bike 100 miles in a day, ran 13 miles, started a business and learned to write songs throughout my life. None of it was easy. I had to suffer and work my ass off every step of the way. If I ever stopped working hard I would lose everything I gained. That’s how it is with me and I suspect it may be that way for you as well.
I’ve discovered that there is no ‘neutral’ gear in life. You are either moving forward or backward. You are either getting fatter or skinnier, richer or poorer, smarter or dumber. Physicist Isaac Newton explains this in his Law of Inertia: an object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. (Yes, this law says an object will stay at rest however you are not an object, you are a live being who is aging and dying day by day. Thus you are moving backward).
The Good News and The Bad News
The good news is that if there is something in your life that you want to change, you can. You can force yourself to workout. You can force yourself to exercise. You can force yourself to budget and save money. You can force yourself to set goals and exceed them. You can and nobody else can do it for you.
The other side of the law is that you can do nothing. If you do nothing things still change. They change for the worse. You already have many forces acting against you. You are a finite being who is dying a little bit every day. New technology is forcing markets and job skills to change. Politics and government are constantly forcing change that affect you. Other areas in your life are changing, forcing changes in your relationship with them. You either move forward or backward.
If you DO change you will suffer. If you DO NOT change you will suffer more. You may get stronger from weight lifting but it doesn’t get easier. You add more weight to the squat rack and you work just as hard as you did before, maybe harder. You earn a promotion at work and now you carry more responsibility. Hard work is hard work, it doesn’t change. You can sit on the couch and avoid the hard work but your suffering will increase. Life will pass you by and your dreams will disappear like a summer rainbow. You will suffer the pain of regret and an unfulfilling life. You’re energy will drain along with your enthusiasm. You will die long before you are dead.
What are you going to do to force change this year?
