“…it ain’t how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” –Rocky speaking to his son in Rocky Balboa
Have you ever lost weight, then gained it back? Have you put some money away in savings, and then spent it on, perhaps, a 42” flat screen tv that was on sale? Have you started a book and never finished it? If so, here are four steps to get back up after a set-back, with examples from my current life.
1.) Take responsibility
“But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain’t you. You’re better than that!” -Rocky to his son
On September 1st, 2010, I weighed 200lbs. Today I weight 245lbs. I stopped exercising, I ate junk food, and I am to blame. I’ve fallen, but my past doesn’t have to define my future. To start the change, I am taking step 2.
2.) Set a plan or goal
“cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody’s ever gone the distance with Creed”. –Rocky to Adrianne
My goal is to weigh 200lbs by August 1st. That is about 2.81 lbs per week. I am going to use a slow carb diet, specifically noted in the Four Hour Body by Tim Ferriss to achieve this. I will also get back to running daily 30 minutes, and lift weights three times per week.
3.) Take action
“You’re gonna eat lightening and crap thunder!” -Mick to Rocky
In Rocky one, he woke up at 4am on a cold morning, ate a raw egg and started jogging. This morning I went to the gym for an hour. Yesterday I went shopping and prepared some foods (salads, chicken, pinto beans, peas) to start my nutrition plan.
4.) Get back up
“Get up you son of a bitch, cause Mickey loves ya” –Mickey to Rocky
Rocky often gets knocked down in a fight (understated, right?). In my struggles with weight loss, I’ve leaned to keep at it. If I keep at it, I will succeed. It’s when I cheat for a day, take a couple of days off from exercise, or get frustrated because the scale stays the same that I can become discouraged and want to quit. That is when it is time to get back up and continue. Don’t quit.
5.) Celebrate the victories
“Yo Adrianne, I did it!” –Rocky after beating Apollo Creed
I’ve found buying new clothes or treating myself to something special help keep my spirits up.
6.) Have fun, life is short
“Do you like having a good time? Then you need-a-good-watch!”-Rocky 2
I love hiking, biking, and being outside. Staying inside the gym on a sunny spring day is not fun for me. So I do the activities I enjoy.
